Condition: Very good antique condition. Some wear to edges and corners. Minor wear to paper cover boards. Binding remains relatively tight despite small splits in leather near front edge of spine. Internally, some foxing of pages and loose leaves near center. Illustration page opposite page 344, "The family dignity is affronted", partially torn horizontally from edge toward spine. Details: A first edition of one of Charles Dickens' classics. Half leather-bound, with black leather on spine and corners. Boards covered in marbled paper, predominantly dark red. Same marbled paper end papers. Seven raised bands on spine, as well as title in gilt lettering. One previous owner's bookplate on inside cover. Edges of leaves marbled all around. Front hinge split but still tight, some interior leaves loose at bottom. Includes printing mistakes corrected in later editions: "William " for Frederick on page 317, line 27; "B 2" for "BB2" on page 371; and "Rigaud" for "Blandois" on pages 469-73. Small label at bottom of end paper on back board states "Bound by GARDNER & STENT, GUILDFORD".
